I can has web comic

Tonight, I’m starting a web comic.

I’ve been drawing for as long as I can remember — from things like my dinosaur report and class time spent drawing Star Wars characters with Nancy Van Riper in kindergarten, to the “I can draw Biker Scouts better than you” duels in junior high school with Chris Gramiccioni to the few years in college that I actually tried to take it seriously and, looking back on it now, was a pretty solid mimic for a few years there.

But for some reason, in the early 1990s, I just… quit. I got busy with work and family and moving and having that family fall apart and then starting a new family; I can’t find a single thing that I might have drawn between maybe 1994 and 2002. I’ve tried this year to get back into it, and have been incredibly frustrated at how atrophied what little skill I ever had has become. I haven’t been good about making time to practice, to do the work I need to do to get better.

So I’m starting a web comic.

I’m going to call this “My Modest Universe,” and it’s going to be about me and the stuff that happens to me and around me. I like my universe, most of the time, but I’ve always wondered if anybody would ever want to read a book about my life. My Modest Universe is full of family and kids and work, love and stress and happiness and tears. But to me, most days it doesn’t seem terribly interesting. I want to do this as a vehicle to help improve my art, but also to hopefully help me capture some of the day-to-day things that make me, well, me.

One-half page, every day. That’s the goal. Maybe it’ll be interesting. Maybe it’ll be horribly boring. Maybe it’ll help me become a significantly better artist, and maybe it won’t help a goddamn bit. Maybe this is something that’ll continue for the next however many years, or maybe it’ll be like most things I start and quietly die out in three weeks. We’ll see how it goes.

The first one is up; posted just a few minutes ago. If you’re interested, you can follow My Modest Universe here: mymodestuniverse.andybartlett.com, or here: andybartlett.tumbr.com. I’m also going to get my Tumblr account configured to post news of updates to my Twitter account; follow me @abart01.

Andy Bartlett

By day, I am the executive director of communications and marketing at Bemidji State University. The rest of the time, I'm a husband, father of three, and proponent of super heroes, lasers, space ships and explosions.
