I wanted to throw in a quick update while I am wrapping up lunch at home.
I got my third-generation iPad at work yesterday and am using it to write this very post using WordPress’s really pretty nice iPad app. The screen on the new iPad is everything it was advertised to be; for a perfect example of what it adds to the user experience, check out the HD comics that have been added to Marvel’s app. They are amazing; the high-resolution images of each page allow you to zoom pretty far in on a particular panel on a page before the image suffers artifacting, which allows you as a reader to get very much up close and personal with a book’s art. I still think Marvel’s pricing structure in insane, so despite the quality of the experience I’m probably not going to be investing much in them. The comics I do have were of the “buy the print copy, get a code for a free digital download” variety, and that isn’t a sustainable option either — because for me, I want digital specifically because I do not want to bother with the print version. So this is a backwards business model in my estimation. And I still wish there were more options to turn off letters, colors and inks to see the various stages of a page’s development, along with touch-to-listen creator commentary in particular panels and/or pages of interest. Comics are still not remotely taking advantage of the format; they are essentially just repurposing their print content.
Grad school tonight — I have a case brief due tomorrow, so I will be kicking at out this evening.
Not much else to report. Time to head back to work. I love this iPad…
